In the Spring of 2008, MGLM sent Elizabeth, Mark, and Matt to compete in the Live Design Challenge at the Traditional Building Show in Boston. A unique and exciting opportunity to design and draft live in front of the Show attendees, the contenders received the program, site information, and drawing requirements on the first day of the competition. Over the next 16 hours and 2 days, the teams furiously sketched, drafted, strained and sweated under the pressure, and produced 6 sheets of designs for attached urban living to fill in a site in Boston, just a short cab ride from the conference hall. Unfortunately for MGLM’s hopes of colored rendering, they played man-down for a couple hours on the first day as Mark, too nice to say no, offered a couple hours of advice to a conference attendee who wanted to know what he should do for a conservatory addition.
When the graphite settled and pencils were down, MGLM came out on top, and received a handsome, albeit broken, clock for their efforts. And said award-clock now records the time of victory for eternity.
Unfortunately for those wishing to compete in the future, and those wishing to watch some live design and team infighting occur, the Live Design Challenge no longer takes place. Remnants of it exist here however.
